Depth shown includes shelf - these fit between the studs - no extra depth required This niche comes in 3 parts. There is the framework with shelf, the back part of the niche, and a plastic cutout for lighting at the base. The plastic cutout at the base allows the customer to install lighting if they wish to illuminate the niche from below. This cover is about 1/4" lower then the shelf and is flexible, so not recommend to hold weight. The actual shelf is 4 inches deep.
